Choose how Athena builds the progression, then set the mood, chord style, melody, and rhythm.
Generation modes
Random — The most unpredictable mode. It can create something musical, strange, or completely unexpected. That is the point.
Modal — Simpler and more repetitive. Good for steady loops that leave room for vocals.
Curated — Uses the style and movement of our own chord progressions for a more specific sound.
Pro — Available with Athena Pro. It is Athena’s most polished mode, built for more sophisticated progressions that feel complete.
Moods
Melancholy — Uses minor harmony and favors emotional, downward-moving progressions. Great for Alternative R&B, Dark Pop, and sad LoFi.
Happy — Uses major harmony, brighter Pop movement, and a little more energy. Good for Pop and lighter LoFi.
Chill — Favors open, looping progressions that feel smooth and relaxed. With Lush or Complex chords, it can lean slightly jazzy.
Somber — The darkest mood. It favors minor movement, heavier tension, and stronger resolutions for sad or dramatic songs.
Chord flavors
Simple — Clean, basic chords that are easy to build around.
Lush — Richer chords with more color and emotion.
Complex — More advanced chords and voicings for a sophisticated sound.
Melody styles
Basic — A simple melody that follows the chords.
Motif — A short musical idea that repeats and develops.
Phrase — A longer melody with more movement.
Arp — Plays through the chord notes in an arpeggiated pattern.
Rhythm styles
Sustained — Long, held chords.
Pulse — Steady repeated chord hits.
Bounce — A more rhythmic, syncopated groove.

Is Athena a plugin I install in my DAW?
No. Athena is currently web-based. An audio plugin version is coming soon for Pro users.
Can I use the MIDI in released music?
Yes. Athena’s generated output is royalty-free. You can arrange, edit, produce, and release music built from the MIDI you generate.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free includes 25 generations and 3 MIDI downloads per day, all four generation modes, and basic library saving. Pro includes unlimited generations and downloads, 80 ready-to-edit Athena presets, advanced editing, undo and redo history, full saved-progression visibility and editing, and access to the audio plugin version when it arrives (coming soon).
What are Athena Presets?
Athena Presets are 80 ready-to-edit starting points included with Pro. The collection mixes chord-only progressions, simple melodies, and fuller ideas created with Modal, Curated, and Pro modes. Open one, change anything you want, and export the result as MIDI.
What does fair use mean?
Pro has no fixed daily limit for normal music production. Fair use simply prevents automated spamming or farming—such as generating dozens of progressions every second or trying to download hundreds or thousands in a short period. You can generate and download as much as you genuinely need; Athena only slows down or blocks activity that is clearly automated or unreasonable.
What does “lifetime” mean?
Athena Pro is a one-time $89 purchase rather than a recurring subscription. It includes continued access to Athena Pro and future Pro updates.
Will the MIDI work with my DAW?
Athena exports standard MIDI files, so you can use the result with DAWs and instruments that accept MIDI import.
Do I have to buy Pro before I can try Athena?
No. Start with Athena Free to test the workflow. You can still download 3 MIDI files per day with the Free version.
